Shopping in Ojai

Artists, Purveyors & Innovators peddle their wares in the valley.

It’s no accident that retail shopping has been an important part of the Ojai experience since our earliest days. Our local culture is formed and influenced by the creativity of our community, so our stores reflect this sense of innovation, individuality, and purpose. Ojai’s shopping districts can loosely be organized into four areas. Each has its own distinctive style and sense of fun.

The Ojai Village Merchant Experience offers a wide range of shopping opportunities. Among the must-see influential retail experiences are Nomad Gallery & Foundation, where owner Leslie Clark frequently travels to remote western Niger to visit expert artisans and to help support their nomadic lifestyles. Also Barbara Bowman Boutique has been defining and refining the fashion-forward Ojai style for 30 years. Rains Department Store has been in the same family, and location, since 1914. The Arcade itself was built around this friendly department store with old-fashioned service with the latest offerings.
Beyond the Arcade visitors and locals can find custom-made experiences including Bart’s Books, the world-famous outdoor bookstore, and also the Mob Shop, the mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. The Ojai Valley Museum preserves and promotes Ojai’s culture from its beautiful venue, the former Thomas Aquinas Church building.

Another key cluster is behind the Arcade at Porch Gallery, where top art from the around the country can be found in their exciting, edgy exhibits.  On Sunday mornings during and after the nearby Ojai Farmers’ Market many Ojaians are known to cluster on the porch for live music and conversation.

On the corner of Matilija & Montgomery Streets you can find the A&A Relaxation Station, founded with a mission to make massage an affordable part of daily life. For a delicious snack, check out Tipple & Ramble. To make your Ojai adventure complete, pass some time at Nutmeg’s Ojai House by enjoying their beautiful patio, whimsical cards, picking up your favorite power crystals and maybe even get a reading from one of their on-site professionals.

In bustling Meiners Oaks, El Roblar Avenue is an off-the-beaten-path treasure. Uncluttered by tourists, yet lined with local favorites that honor Cali-hip tradition including Bookends Bookstore, and Terramor Organic Home. Find  eateries, Coffee ConnectionPapa Lennon’s Pizzeria. Family-owned Farmer & The Cook turns into gathering spot for the Meiner’s Oaks community with a fresh, vegetarian kitchen and homegrown produce for sale. On the weekends enjoy music and the pizza oven, and especially the locals.

If you seek an array of boutiques offering fashion, one-of-a-kind art pieces, and jewelry, you’ve come to the right place. We offer an ever-expanding selection to help you tocreate and enhance your own personal style. At the very least, be sure to visit the historic Arcade designed by the famed Richard Requa of Mead & Requa, commissioned by Ojai founder Edward Drummond Libbey, in the style of the “City Beautiful” movement that originated in the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
